What do you mean by a handicap in golf?
The process of rating golfers by their scores is called handicap. It is perhaps similar to that of the bowlers rating processes. In golf, one may play against people who have a completely different set of skills. In this condition also, the match is considered fair and even. This is because of the fact that golfers require to turn in all their scores to the handicap committee against which they are entitled a handicap number. This number is derived from what you actually score in the game. Nowadays, this handicap number is basically given by the software programs. For a less skilled person, a higher handicap number is assigned. For a better skilled hockey player, a lower handicap number is provided. From the current scores of the higher handicapper, strokes are deducted in order to harmonize the match.
Handicap is actually based on rating which are not really par. Handicap is therefore expressed in numerological form. An example would make better understanding of the process. Suppose a player A had been an 18 handicap. He is playing against player B who is ranked as 12 Handicap. In the process the Player B should provide 6 shots when he is playing against player A in one of his heads up match. This is the method of handicap.
